Call or fill in the form. We go through your situation and tell you what we need from your old school.

  2. 02No paperwork

    We cancel for you

The cancellation and the training record are ours to handle. There is nothing for you to chase.

  3. 03In person

    First meeting & assessment

We look at where you have got to, plan the remaining lessons and re-register you with the Straßenverkehrsamt.

  4. 04Seamless

    Carry on driving

You pick up where you left off: the theory topics still missing, the driving lessons left, and preparing for the tests.

  • Bring: your ID card — nothing else
  • A theory test you have already passed stays valid
  • You can change in any class, even mid-training
  • Theory Mon, Wed, Thu 18:30–20:00 · Sat 9:30–11:00 and 11:00–12:30

When changing is worth it

Most people put it off for months because they expect a confrontation. It is an administrative process — and you do not do most of it yourself.

  • Appointments take weeks, or get cancelled at short notice
  • You are not getting on with your instructor
  • The theory times do not fit your life
  • You are being pushed towards the test, or held back from it
  • You have moved and the journey has become too far
  • You do not know how many lessons you still need

The honest case against

If you are nearly finished, it can work out cheaper to sit the test where you are. We tell you that in the assessment drive — before you sign up, not after.

Changing driving school in Düsseldorf

Changing school is not a new application: at the Düsseldorf licensing authority only the school on your existing application changes. We file that re-registration there for you, on the day you sign up with us. So you start again nowhere — not in the training and not on paper. The only thing before it is the assessment drive, and that is not a test but an honest position fix.

Common questions about changing

Do my previous driving lessons count?

Yes, in full. Every theory topic and every driving lesson from your previous school is recognised — you do not start again.

The basis for that is the training record every driving school has to keep. It states which topics you attended and which special drives you have already driven, and we take that position over one to one.

The one thing that does not transfer is the feel in the car after a longer break. So we start with an entirely ordinary lesson to see where you are, and build on that.

Does the old school have to hand over my records?

Yes. It is obliged to give you your training record, and may not attach conditions to it.

An unpaid invoice is no reason to hold the papers back — one is a claim for money, the other is your training status. In practice it usually goes without discussion, because the rule is well known.

If it does stick, we deal with it. We draft the cancellation and the request for the record together with you, so you do not have to ring them.

Do I have to sit the theory test again?

No. A theory test you have passed stays passed, even when you change driving school.

If you have not sat it yet, the topics you attended are not lost either. With us you only catch up the double lessons still missing, and we enter you as soon as all 14 topics are together.

A new application to the Straßenverkehrsamt is not needed for any of this. On the existing application, only the driving school changes.

How long does changing take?

The paperwork takes us a few days: the cancellation, the training record and the re-registration, which we file at the Straßenverkehrsamt on the day you sign up.

How long the office takes over it is the office's call. Your training does not stand still in the meantime, because only the school on the application changes and no new licence is being applied for.

In practice that means you can come to theory from the next class on, and we plan the driving lessons as soon as we know where your training stands.

What if I have already failed a test?

Then it changes nothing about the move. We look at where it went wrong, practise exactly those points and enter you for the retake.

An unsuccessful attempt stays on the application whichever school you carry on with. It blocks nothing: you can resit the theory test after two weeks, and the practical one after two weeks as well.

In the office it often arrives as an embarrassed preamble. It does not need to — when you are changing school it is the most useful thing you can bring, because it shows us where to start.

Do I have to tell my old school why I am leaving?

No. A training contract can be ended at any time and without giving a reason.

There is no notice period holding you and nobody you owe an explanation to. A conversation in person is not needed either: the cancellation is a letter, not an appointment.

We draft it with you and send it off together with the request for your training record. You do not have to ring them or go there.

Will my old school refund me?

Whatever they have already billed is between you and them — no refund for it comes from us.

The rule of thumb: what was delivered stays paid for. Lessons driven and classes attended have been provided. Whether amounts paid in advance come back depends on your contract there, and we are happy to read through it with you at the first consultation.

With us you pay only the change fee instead of a full new registration. What it is made up of is set out on our prices page.

Can I change if I have already passed the theory test?

Yes, and that is the simplest case: a passed theory test stays valid for twelve months, whoever you carry on with.

What matters is the clock. The practical test has to fall inside those twelve months, otherwise the theory is due again. Changing school does not extend the deadline — but it does not shorten it either.

So at the first consultation we look at your test date first and plan backwards from there. Bring your training record and the plan is in place the same day.
