Class BF17

Your licence
at seventeen.

BF17 is the ordinary Class B licence, just a year earlier. Until your 18th birthday you drive with a registered supervisor, and after that on your own — with no further test.

Who can supervise

Not only parents. Anyone who meets the requirements can be registered — a sibling, a relative, a friend of the family.

Requirements and timings

  • You can sign up with the school from 16 years and 6 months
  • Consent from a parent or guardian when you sign up
  • Eyesight test, first-aid course, biometric passport photo
  • Theory test at the earliest 3 months before your 17th birthday
  • Practical test at the earliest 1 month before your 17th birthday
  • 2-year probationary period, starting the day you pass

Everything else runs exactly as it does for Class B: 14 theory topics, practice lessons in city traffic and the 12 compulsory special lessons on the motorway, on rural roads and at night. BF17 can be combined with a manual, with automatic only, or with the B197 rule.

Common questions about BF17

Can I drive abroad with BF17?

No. The certificate you hold before your 18th birthday is valid in Germany only. At 18 you receive the card licence and can drive abroad with it.

What happens if I drive without my supervisor?

It is a serious offence: a fine, a point in Flensburg, revocation of your licence and the probationary period extended to 4 years. We strongly advise against it.

How long is the probationary period with BF17?

2 years, exactly as with Class B. It starts on the day you pass the practical test — so at 17.

Does BF17 fit around school?

Yes. Theory classes are in the evening and on Saturday morning, and we plan driving lessons around your timetable. Bring your parents to the first meeting and we go through it all together.
