Class B96

More trailer.

B96 is not a class of its own but an extension to Class B: a combination up to 4,250 kg, with no TÜV appointment. Instead of a test you attend a driver course with a theory and a practical part.

Is B96 enough for your combination

Add your car's kerb weight to the trailer's maximum authorised mass. If the total stays under 4,250 kg, B96 covers it — above that you need Class BE. We work it through with you at the first meeting.

How the course runs

  1. 012.5 hours

    Theory session

    Vehicle combinations, how a trailer behaves, braking distances and securing a load.

  2. 023.5 hours

    Practical session

    Hitching and unhitching, reversing with a trailer, manoeuvring in tight spaces, feeling how it brakes.

  3. 031 hour

    Driving in traffic

    Driving the combination on real roads — city traffic, turning, parking.

  4. 04No TÜV

    Certificate & registration

    After the course you get your certificate of attendance. Key number 96 is then added to your licence at the Straßenverkehrsamt.

  • About 7 hours in total — doable in a single day
  • Minimum age 18, or 17 with BF17
  • You practise with a real combination
  • Registration at the Straßenverkehrsamt: roughly 2–4 weeks

Common questions about B96

What is the difference between B96 and BE?

B96 allows combinations up to 4,250 kg and asks only for the driver course. BE allows combinations up to 7,000 kg, but requires a practical test at the TÜV.

Do I have to sit a test for B96?

No. B96 is a course with a theory and a practical part, and it ends with a certificate of attendance. No TÜV, nothing to fail.

Can I do B96 at the same time as Class B?

Yes. The course runs alongside your Class B training, and key number 96 is then added together with the Class B licence.

Is B96 valid abroad?

Yes. Key number 96 is recognised across the EU — you may drive combinations up to 4,250 kg in every EU country.
