What a retest costs you again — and what it does not

Two items come back, five do not. The most expensive part is on neither list.

The short answer

Two items fall due again: the testing organisation's fee and the driving school's presentation fee, plus the lessons between the two attempts. What does not fall due again is the registration fee, the authority's fee, the eyesight test, the first aid course and the learning material. You may retake after two weeks at the earliest, theory or practical.

Three questions follow a failed test, and the one about money usually comes second. It is easy to answer, because the bill does not start again from scratch — it repeats one small part of itself.

The two items that come back

The test fee is charged by the testing organisation, so TÜV or DEKRA, and it applies to every attempt. The presentation fee covers what happens at our end around the appointment: booking, scheduling, the car, the drive to the test centre, your instructor being there. Both are per test, not per training.

What stands

  • The registration fee — it does not fall due a second time
  • The licensing authority's fee for your application
  • The eyesight test and the first aid course
  • The learning material
  • All the theory lessons you attended and every special drive already done

And a passed theory test stays valid for twelve months. Retaking the practical means retaking the practical only — the theory does not reopen.

The item that actually moves the bill

The lessons in between. The two-week wait is prescribed, and it is not a punishment but the period in which something is meant to change. How many units belong in there depends on how precisely you know what went wrong.

Why we talk first and drive second

After a failed practical we sit down before we book anything. In most cases the reason can be named in one sentence — one situation, one look, one place. Knowing that means a few targeted lessons. Booking a few more lessons in general means driving longer and changing less, because nobody knows what is being practised.

The second attempt is the nervous one

Almost always, and that is normal — it has already gone wrong once. How the test drive runs and what happens after a fail are posts of their own.

The individual items are on the price page, set out one by one rather than as a total.

What to take away

A retest does not set your training back, it repeats exactly two items. It only gets expensive when nobody works out what went wrong — then you are not paying for the test twice, you are paying for the lessons before it a third time.
