The short answer
Abandoned training does not expire: theory lessons and driving lessons stay documented and recognised. Two other things are time-limited — a passed theory test is valid for twelve months, and your application at the licensing authority has a life of its own. A call there settles both before you do anything else.
There are more unfinished licences than abandoned ones — most simply lie there. A move, an apprenticeship, a job with no car, and at some point it has been six years. The most common misconception is that everything now starts over.
What stays
- Theory lessons attended — they are in the training record and do not expire
- Practice lessons and special drives driven, documented in the same way
- The first aid course: for a licence application it has no expiry date
- Your previous school has to hand over the record, even years later
What has a deadline
A passed theory test is valid for twelve months — older than that and it is retaken. The eyesight certificate also has a limited validity for submitting an application. And the application itself does not run indefinitely: whether yours still stands or has to be lodged again is something the licensing authority will tell you, and that is the first call, not the last.
Almost always with an apology. "This is embarrassing, but I stopped back then" — followed by the assumption that everything is gone. It is not, and we say that first, because the rest of the conversation is a different one afterwards. What is actually missing is usually written on a sheet the old school still has in a folder.
Where we start
With an assessment drive, not with a plan. After a five-year gap the documented progress is one thing and the actual ability another — both have to meet before any number is named. Usually the real level sits below the one on paper, and usually less far below it than the person expects.
If the break had a reason
Sometimes it was not time but a bad experience. Do say so — it changes how we build the first few lessons. Driving anxiety is a subject of its own here, and more common than most people assume.
