The short answer
Class B has 30 questions. You pass with no more than 10 error points. Questions are worth different amounts: get two five-point questions wrong and you have failed, even though the total is exactly 10. You can retake after a minimum of two weeks.
The numbers are quickly told; the trap inside them is not. “Ten error points” sounds like room to move, but depending on the weighting it is a single hard question plus an easy one.
How it is marked
Each question carries 2, 3, 4 or 5 error points, depending on how safety-critical the topic is. Priority and speed weigh heavily, environmental topics less. Two five-point questions answered wrongly means “failed”, whatever the rest looks like — the rule exists so nobody can trade the critical topics off against the harmless ones.
A question with several correct answers only counts as right if every applicable one is ticked and no wrong one is. There is no half right.
Video questions
Some questions are a short video rather than a still. It plays three times, and then you answer from memory — there is no rewinding. So look straight at what is moving, not at the signs by the roadside.
On the day
- Bring your ID card or passport — no ID, no test
- The test is taken on a computer at the testing organisation, not at the driving school
- Phones stay away; switching one on counts as an attempt to cheat
- You get the result straight afterwards
Which language
You do not have to sit it in German. Twelve languages are available — which ones is its own post.
Afterwards
A passed theory test is valid for twelve months. The practical test has to happen inside that window, otherwise the theory comes round again. That is plenty of time — unless the theory sits right at the start and the driving lessons drag. Which is why we only enter you once it is clear the practical will follow.
